Can my firm use open-source AI with a reviewed legal workflow?

Selected open-source tools can support document preparation and workflow routing in an environment your firm controls. They still need hosting, setup, updates and security maintenance. We distinguish open-source software from source-available tools and open-weight models, then test the proposed configuration with trained human reviewers and your attorney’s approval.

Custom pricing. Scope and price confirmed in writing.

Match education to the work, then test the work

Legal support outsourcing should begin with role fit. Review the proposed specialist’s education, relevant experience, writing and practical work against the task. LL.B., LL.M., J.D. and paralegal training describe different pathways; they do not establish U.S. attorney licensure.

Use a synthetic exercise that requires source checks and handling an unclear answer. Agree the review owner and permissions before a person or tool receives access.

Open source, self-hostable and open weight mean different things

An open-source software license defines rights in the covered code. Self-hostable describes where a tool can run, not whether its license is open source. Open-weight describes model availability; it does not establish unrestricted commercial rights, training-data rights or permission to use confidential information.

A version-aware stack, with license boundaries

The table records first-party license research checked October 13, 2026. These are components to evaluate, not a claim that every tool is included or connected to every legal platform. Confirm the exact revision, dependencies, license notices and delivery arrangement before a build.

Activepieces community scope

Open-source MIT scope; separate enterprise code

License: MIT Expat for code outside listed exclusions

Community-scope workflow automation can be self-hosted under MIT terms.

Scope and limits

packages/ee and packages/server/api/src/app/ee are excluded. Enterprise production use requires an appropriate agreement and licensed seats; third-party component licenses also apply. Do not promise enterprise permissions or all controls without paid licensing.

Node-RED

Open-source software

License: Apache-2.0

A flow-based tool for connecting systems and building event-driven workflows.

Scope and limits

Review added nodes and dependencies separately. API access, credentials, endpoints and limits depend on the systems connected. A generic connector is not verified integration with every legal platform.

n8n

Self-hostable, source-available; not OSI open source

License: Sustainable Use License for covered main-branch code; enterprise exclusions

n8n can support self-hosted workflow automation subject to its license and delivery model.

Scope and limits

The official current FAQ allows internal operation and paid client outputs if clients cannot configure workflows. Hosting n8n as a service, white-labeling, outside-party workflow configuration or licensed features can require commercial terms. Cloud subscription terms are separate. Confirm the exact deployment, access and client-control design before promising inclusion.

Ollama

Open-source runtime software

License: MIT

Ollama can run selected models locally and provides an API for model use.

Scope and limits

Runtime license does not license every model. Cloud mode and remote connectors can send data outside the firm's environment. Local operation must be configured and tested; hardware, maintenance and separate services still cost money.

Mistral 7B Instruct v0.3

Open weights under Apache-2.0 for this version

License: Apache-2.0 as identified by the publisher's model repository and documentation

The named v0.3 repository lists Apache 2.0. Commercial selection needs version-specific license review because of conflicting publisher wording.

Scope and limits

Publisher documentation marks the model retired March 30, 2025. Downloadable weights are distinct from a current supported hosted API. Do not promote it as the current default, imply all Mistral models share this license, or add a replacement outside the approved list. Validate suitability on approved test data.

Llama family

Open-weight with version-specific custom terms; not OSI open source

License: Version-specific Meta community license; Llama 4 checked

Selected Llama weights can be self-hosted under the applicable Meta license.

Scope and limits

Pin the exact version. The checked Llama 4 license includes acceptable-use, attribution, redistribution and additional commercial conditions. It is not a blanket unrestricted license across the family. Hosting, model operation and support costs remain.

Tesseract OCR

Open-source software

License: Apache-2.0

OCR can convert supported document images into text for subsequent review.

Scope and limits

OCR is not verification of the document's meaning, completeness or provenance. Check scan quality, page order and extracted fields. No promise of perfect handwriting recognition or error-free medical records.

Paperless-ngx

Open-source software with copyleft obligations

License: GPL-3.0

A self-hostable document management application with OCR and document organization features.

Scope and limits

Review redistribution/source obligations for a delivered package and licenses of dependencies. This is not automatically a legal hold, evidentiary chain-of-custody or court-compliant archive. Confirm access, retention, deletion and recovery design.

Whisper

Open-source speech recognition code and published model weights

License: MIT

Whisper provides speech-to-text models that can be run in an approved local environment.

Scope and limits

Transcripts can include words not spoken and can vary in accuracy by language and speaker. Check against the audio. The model card cautions against nonconsensual recordings and high-risk decision use. No automatic legal recording consent, certified transcript, verified speaker identity or hosted API entitlement is supplied by the license.

Docassemble

Open-source software

License: MIT for Docassemble code

Guided interviews can populate document templates.

Scope and limits

Dependencies and container components keep their own licenses; an entire image is not solely MIT. Client-approved templates, field checks and attorney approval are still needed. Document assembly does not determine legal eligibility or advice.

Flowise community scope

Open-source Apache scope; separate commercial code

License: Apache-2.0 outside specified exclusions

Community-scope Flowise can be used to build AI applications.

Scope and limits

Enterprise directory and explicitly marked files such as IdentityManager.ts are excluded from Apache scope. Production enterprise use requires applicable commercial subscription/hosts. Connected LLM services, models and dependencies carry separate terms.

Langflow

Open-source application software

License: MIT

Langflow supports visual construction of AI applications.

Scope and limits

Licensing of the builder does not pay for connected model APIs, grant data rights or validate output. Dependencies, cloud service terms and deployment safeguards require separate review.

What “no license fees” does and does not mean

Covered open-source components can be used without license fees under their applicable terms. Hosting, hardware, setup, security hardening, support and optional commercial features still cost money. Model/API charges and connected vendor plan limits may also apply.

We do not promise unlimited usage, a saving percentage or commercial legal AI accuracy. The quote identifies selected components and operating responsibilities. Fixed-scope projects. Pricing confirmed in writing before work starts.

Keep the data path explicit

A build can run in a cloud account or server your firm controls when it is designed that way. That is not an automatic property of every product or model. Inspect outbound connections, remote APIs, logs, backups, telemetry and support access before approving sensitive inputs.

Your firm approves every tool and data category before use. Open-source tools need setup, updates and security maintenance. We define those duties in the build or ongoing operator scope.

Choose the smallest stack that fits the work

Begin with one output, such as a source-linked document index. Confirm the existing system’s capabilities before adding OCR, routing or a model runtime. Keep each component replaceable through documented input/output contracts where practical; changing a model or connector still requires testing.

Mistral 7B is listed for transparency because it appears in the requested stack. Current publisher documentation marks the reviewed version retired, and differing commercial-license wording needs clarification. It is not a recommended default. Llama requires exact-version Meta terms and is not described here as OSI open source.

What stays with your attorneys

Counsel approves permitted legal uses, confidentiality decisions, source reliance and every external release. No license or deployment location authorizes AI to give advice, make legal decisions or send anything to a client, court or opposing party without attorney approval.

A person remains accountable

Six controls for every proposed AI workflow

Approved tools and data

Use only firm-approved systems, permissions and data categories.

Drafts with named reviewers

Label every AI output as a draft and route it to a named human reviewer.

Traceable extracted facts

Keep a source link or document/page reference for every extracted fact.

Visible exceptions

Log missing evidence, conflicting inputs and failed steps. Never silently fill gaps.

Attorney approval before sending

AI never makes legal decisions or gives advice. Nothing is sent to a client, court or opposing party without attorney approval.

SOC 2 Type II scope review

Remote Legal Team LLC states SOC 2 Type II security. Confirm report scope, period and covered services during diligence; it does not certify every proposed tool or make a workflow automatically compliant.

Questions about this workflow

Does open source mean there are no operating costs?

No. Covered components may have no license fees, but hosting, setup, model usage, maintenance and support can still have costs. Commercial features and connected software plans may require separate payment.

Are n8n and Llama open source?

n8n is described here as self-hostable and source-available under its applicable terms. Llama is open-weight with version-specific Meta license conditions. Neither is described as OSI open source.

Can the model run inside my firm’s environment?

That can be designed for selected components, but the complete data path must be checked. Remote APIs, connectors, logging and support arrangements can move data outside that environment.
